December 19, 2010 — The first day of winter is Tuesday. What does the season hold?

Winter is only three months long but the winter-LIKE weather lasts much longer in parts of Canada.

The season officially begins on Tuesday, December 21, the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. But the first snowfall came weeks ago in many cities and towns in Canada, and snow covers most of the country.

The first day of winter is also the shortest day of the year.

“The good news is that from this day on, then the sun will start its northward journey across the sky, and the days will get longer,” says astronomer Andrew Yee.

We can expect a typical Canadian winter this year as La Niña produces stormy conditions, according to The Weather Network's Winter Outlook.
