Wildfires scorch California

May 21, 2010 — A wildfire in southern California has already spread over 300 hectares.

Firefighters in California are battling a scorching blaze. The fire broke out Thursday afternoon and has already spread over 300 hectares. Crews say that about 50 percent of the flames have been contained.

Although no evacuations were ordered, the fire burned dangerously close to homes in Riverside County, around 72km south of Los Angeles.

Hot and dry conditions are helping to fuel the fire and strong winds are what cause the flames to spread. Helicopters continue to drop water on the scene in an attempt to completely contain the fire.
