The tremendous 8.8-magnitude quake shattered buildings and left hundreds dead on February 27th. The quake also helped to form tsunamis that swept several cities along the coastline and produced hundreds of powerful aftershocks.
The gathering took place in Concepcion, one of the hardest hit regions. Residents came together outside the cathedral at 03:34am to mark the exact moment the quake hit.
The early morning vigil had many holding candles and praying for loved ones.
The quake was the fifth strongest on record since 1900 and two aftershocks measured in at 6.9 magnitude -- making them nearly as strong as the quake that demolished Port au Prince, Haiti.
