Heavy Snow Blankets Northern China

February 24, 2010 — An overnight storm brings heavy amounts of snow to China's northern provinces.

People in northern China woke up to heavy snow and chilly temperatures on Wednesday morning.

According to one meteorological department in the region, about 55 centimetres of snow fell. That's only two centimetres below the all-time daily snowfall record.

Soldiers and local volunteers were busy clearing snow off streets and buildings throughout the day. At the same time, they had to deal with temperatures dipping below the freezing mark.

A 'Yellow Alert' was declared in the Heilongjiang province, as officials were anticipating traffic disruptions.
