The fire outbreak has also had a significant impact on oil production and thousands of workers were forced to leave a drilling plant in Fort McMurray.
Several pipelines and equipment have been damaged, affecting the rate of drilling for some areas. One oil company says production has been slowed to 4,000 barrels a day. That's down dramatically from the usual rate of 22,000 barrels per day.
Officials say drilling could be curbed into the second half of this year as companies assess the current damage to facilities.
