Now in its 18th year, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is an annual event created to rehabilitate local shorelines and raise awareness about litter.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to take part in this year's event, which runs from September 17-25 at various locations across the country.
Last year more than 47,000 volunteers helped remove 98,071 kg of trash from 1,219 sites.
Toronto volunteer Susan Debreceni applauds the program for its ability to get people involved in the community.
“It brings the message back to the community about why it's so important to take care of our shorelines,” she says.
Cigarette butts and food waste are among the most common trash items collected. More exotic items include a wedding dress and an Elvis costume.
“We have found nearly everything out there,” Debreceni says - including a kitchen sink.
