The festival celebrates Greek culture

August 5, 2010 — Come rain or shine, the Pilaros Taste of Danforth festival will go on as planned.

Torontonians will be saying 'Opa' this weekend as the Pilaros Taste of Danforth kicks off on Friday. Greek music, dance and food will be some of the attractions to lure residents downtown for the day to celebrate Hellenic culture. But choosing the date for the festival, that's now in its 17th year, is no stroke of luck.
“When it first started off it wasn't on this weekend and it rained,” says Howard Lichtman, spokesperson for Pilaros Taste of Danforth.“So they actually did meteorological research to determine which weekend of the summer it is least likely to rain. And historically, and for the predictability perspective meteorologists said that this weekend it was the least likely to rain and ever since it has always been on the weekend.”

That's not to say that the festival hasn't faced any rain. While Lichtman admits it puts a damper on the party, he says it hasn't stopped visitors from taking part. Should you be caught in a shower, he advises taking shelter in one of the restaurants for a bite and then rejoin the festivities once it dries up.
The Weather Network meteoroligist Dayna Vettese says Friday and Saturday promise good weather with temperatures in the mid-twenties. However, on Sunday there is a chance for isolated showers in the afternoon and evening. It will also be hotter with the mercury at 29°C but the humidity will make it feel like 35°C.
However, Lichtman says there are plenty of ways to keep cool at the festival.“We make sure all along the way we have drinks for people on the street and the restaurants all offer drinks as well,” he says. “So as long as you stay hydrated you’re going to be in great shape.”
The Pilaros Taste of Danforth is Canada's largest street festival and is visited by over 1.2 million people.
