Hockey rink roof collapses in Slovakia

Andrea Stockton, staff writer
January 25, 2012 — The roof of a hockey rink in Slovakia collapsed due to the pressure of a snowstorm.

Former NHL player Richard Zednik was training with some young hockey players at a rink in Námestovo, Slovakia over the weekend.

Pieces of ice began to fall from the roof during the training session and eventually, the whole thing collapsed.

Fortunately both Zednik and the youth players were cleared from the rink without injury before the roof caved in.

Officials say the heavy weight of the snow and ice from a recent snowstorm is what lead to the instability and caused the roof to completely crumble in a matter of seconds. Only a tunnel between the arena walls and the boards were left after the collapse.

Police continue to investigate.
