Flooding in Kazakhstan

March 12, 2010 — More than 20 people have died after heavy rain and melting snow triggered flooding in Kazakhstan.

On Thursday, a dam burst in Kazakhstan causing floodwaters to pour into several villages.

Around 20 people have died and thousands were forced from their homes. The flooding has also washed away bridges and highways.

Spring flooding is normal in Central Asia, but the sudden rise in temperatures after weeks of heavy snow storms made the problem even worse this year.

The government says they plan to compensate residents whose homes have been completely destroyed.
