June 28, 2011 — As schools close for summer vacation, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is encouraging drivers to keep a close eye on the roads for children playing near traffic.

As the school season ends and summer vacations begin, motorists are urged to keep their eyes on the road.

“CAA is just reminding drivers to keep an eye out for children,” says Silvana Aceto with CAA South Central Ontario.  There's going to be more children out on the roads and sidewalks.”

Aceto adds that residential areas with playgrounds and parks can be extremely dangerous as children can dart out from behind parked vehicles in search of a ball or toy.

“Also, leave extra space on the road when they are cycling and check behind your vehicle for children playing on the sidewalk before you back out of your driveway,” says Aceto.

CAA offers these tips for a kid-safe summer:

  • Slow down near parks, playgrounds and residential areas where kids are playing.
  • Watch for kids darting out from behind parked cars into the street chasing a ball or pet.
  • Keep an eye out for skateboarders, inline skaters and scooters on sidewalks and streets.
  • Check for kids behind your vehicle before backing up.
  • Leave extra space on the road for kids riding their bikes.

It's important to plan ahead for long drives during the summer months as well. Whether you're heading to the cottage or planning a long family road trip, CAA says there are certain things you can do to avoid a stressful vacation.

  • Keep kids occupied with DVDs, books and music.
  • Plan frequent breaks for long road trips.
  • Pack snacks and toys for kids at rest stops.
