Lake effect flurries blow into Ontario

November 2, 2012 — Lake effect flurries off of Georgian Bay made for a tough morning drive for many Ontarians Friday morning.

People in communities along Georgian Bay stretching to Barrie and beyond reported at least some Friday morning snowfall, including some on-and-off flurries as far as London and Toronto.
While accumulations weren't too high, several area roads were slick and visibility was poor in several areas.
Weather Network meteorologist Dayna Vettese says the timing isn't unusual.
"The lakes are still warm, but we're starting to get colder air moving in," she said, pointing to the shorter days leading into the Winter Solstice in December.
She added most accumulation would be above Ontario's snowbelt. However, the extreme south of the province, including major cities like Toronto and Hamilton, wouldn't necessarily be immune to flurries going forward.
By 9:30 a.m., however, the system seemed to be clearing up in several places.
In Orillia, OPP spokesman Sgt. Peter Leon said the sun was already shining again in his area, and while the roads were slick, there was little accumulation.
There may be more of the same in the forecast for Friday night into Saturday morning, but over a wider area reaching further into the south and southwest.
Parts of northwestern Ontario and Manitoba already saw snow last month, as did Alberta and Saskatchewan had their turn.
