August 10, 2012 — A large mass of volcanic rocks have been spotted floating off the coast of New Zealand, the Navy revealed Friday.

According to spokesman Lieutenant Tim Oscar, the cluster covers about 26,000 square kilometres -- roughly the size of Belgium.

The stones are made from pumice and are the size of golf balls.

Officials believe the rocks were released by an underwater volcano.

The discovery was made earlier this week by Air Force New Zealand, about 1,000 km northeast of Auckland.
