On August 24th, 1992 Hurricane Andrew ripped across southern Florida and made landfall as a major hurricane. Winds were gusting over 260 km/h.
Over a million residents were forced to flee their homes as Andrew raced from the Bahamas to Florida. Sadly, 40 people were killed when the storm tore through.
Not only was it one of the most destructive storms to hit the U.S., it was also one of the most expensive. Officials say Andrew caused about $20 billion worth of damage.
