The ferry ships that are collectively known as the Maid of the Mist were launched into the churning waters of the Niagara River Gorge on Saturday. With higher than average temperatures in Niagara Falls and most of Southern Ontario, the ships have been able to be launched weeks ahead of schedule.
The tourist attraction will be begin taking people for an up close encounter with the Horseshoe Falls on April 10th.
Last year, the vessels opened their gates a full two weeks later. The early launch is being attributed to the warmer than average winter that the area experienced. Every year, the boats are hauled out of the water to protect them from ice damage.
The Maid of the Mist has been a tourist favorite since it's opening in 1846.
