Flood Woes Continue in Mexico

February 4, 2010 — Heavy rain left hundreds of people dead and caused significant damage near Mexico City this week.

Thousands of people were forced out of their homes in Valle de Chalco on Friday, after a sewage canal overflowed.

A river of waste spilled into the community, which is located on the outskirts of Mexico City. Some people on boats ferried through the streets, while others tried to salvage any belongings they could.

Authorities are now using sandbags to try and re-direct the flow of water back into River La Compania.

This sewage canal break comes only days after the region was hit with close to a metre of rain. More than 2,000 homes have been damaged. Mexico City remains under a state of emergency.
