This season, parts of the Maritimes have seen unseasonably mild temperatures. For some, that might mean not-so-ideal weather conditions for the holiday spirit. However, the mild temperatures haven’t stopped one retail owner, Steve Clerke, from feeling extra festive this season.
“I am always in the holiday spirit,” says Clerke. “It’s a beautiful time of year.”
He says that as he distributes rounds of hot apple cider to his customers. His spirit is brimming with the holiday cheer, especially this year.
But why would this be the case when temperatures have been mild, with very little snow in southern New Brunswick. According to Clerke, that’s precisely the reason why his store has seen record sales and why customers from all across Canada are flocking to his store.
“The weather’s been so wonderful that we’ve had people come from all across the country to do their shopping in Moncton, which is really great. We’ve had people this weekend that are from Quebec and from all over Nova Scotia, PEI and northern New Brunswick. It’s because they can get here without worry.”
Lack of snow means better road conditions, which essentially means good business for store owners. Clerke has noticed a steady rise in customers this year, because people have been travelling from far and wide to come to his store. He says you don’t necessarily need snow to be festive.
“People have been able to visit their friends and family and that’s Christmas is all about. And if you can do that easily, that’s what we want for a Christmas season. The Christmas spirit is our hearts. The more you give, the more you get back.”
