Photo dynamic therapy treatments are most often used to reverse the effects of sun damage on the skin. According to Dr. Chantal Chiasson the treatment effectively eliminates pre-cancerous cells.

“When you activate the skin with the photo synthesizer it will kill those cells.”

And with skin cancer on the rise in Canada, Chiasson says more and more people are opting for cosmetic treatments to prevent cancer.

“We have a lot of golfers, a lot of boaters, a lot of outdoor workers people that love outdoor activities.”

Those who spend more time outdoors face a higher risk of developing skin cancer over time. Experts say treatments like this may reduce their risk of developing the most common forms of the disease.

But cosmetic treatments can be pricey and they can't prevent skin cancer from forming all together. That's why it's so important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays every time you go outside.

“We really have to be careful with the sun year long. Sunny days, cloudy days, rainy days there is always UV rays that will penetrate the clouds,” explains Chiasson.

Because no treatment can stop skin cancer cells from forming all together, it's very important to wear broad spectrum sunscreen all year round.
