NASA Scientists Surprised

March 17, 2010 — After drilling into the West Antarctica ice shelf, NASA scientists spotted a small shrimp like creature.

It was quite the surprise, to say the least.

During an expedition in late November last year, NASA scientists discovered a pinkish, orange shrimp-like creature below the Ross Ice Shelf.

After drilling into the West Antarctic ice shelf, a three inch Lyssianasid amphipod was found swimming 600 feet below the ice sheet.

Scientists noticed the little creature as they were drilling there with a borehole camera that was used to look back up toward the ice surface.

The Ross Ice Shelf is the largest of Antarctica.
