August 2, 2011 — Tropical storm Don dissolved Friday, bringing little precipitation to south Texas.

People in the drought-stricken region had high hopes for Don, the first tropical storm to come ashore in Texas since Ike in 2008.

Texas has been suffering through its worst drought since record-keeping began 116 years ago.

Don, which was packing sustained winds of more than 80 kilometres per hour as it churned towards Corpus Christi, quickly fell apart as it approached the shore.

The resulting cluster of weak thunderstorms brought less than an inch of rain to sparsely-populated ranchland south of Baffin Bay.

That was good news for area cotton producers, but other farmers are stuck waiting for the next storm.

Meanwhile, in the eastern Pacific, tropical storm Eugene became a category 1 hurricane Monday.

It's expected to strengthen slightly as it moves northwest, but not affect coastal areas.
